So I'm a newbie here.
I've got an '89 Ranger w a 2.9L engine and a bad oil pump.
4WD, auto trans. body in good shape.
Good ratty truck needing TLC and it will hold up and eventually be restored - MAYBE.
It's the only vehicle I have and I don't have much money to spend.
Looking for help and advice.
Here's a cut and paste from parts wanted.
This will bring all up to speed as to where I'm at.

WTB 2.9L engine for '89 Ranger

HELP!
I have an '89 Ranger; 4WD with an automatic transmission
Looking for a SERVICEABLE 2.9L engine (or a 3.0? Would that just bolt in?) - does not have to be perfect, just to get me going again for now.
{I'll get back to restoring things if I can get the truck going again for short money}
A complete truck in better shape than mine (and mine's not bad) in need of transmission, body parts, glass, etc would work too. As long as the engine is good.
I'm located 30 miles South of Boston, MA.
Send an email would be the fastest way to get in touch.

You need a 2.9.

A 3.0 WILL NOT fit.

A 4.0 will, but ONLY if you change the wirign harness under the hood with one from a 91-94 explorer. COMPLETE underhood, and PCM.

Good luck.

Thanks!
Now the good news-
I've found a 4.0, complete with wire harnesses and flywheel- he whole 9 yards.
102K mi.
It's out of a '91 something (Bronco II maybe he said)
$150 :shok:
(He was working on a ranger and it caught fire on him.
Now he's working on something else and needs his engine stand.)

Looking on Ranger Station it seems to be a fairly easy swap
Any Idea how many hours for an experienced shade tree?

Wires from an Explorer. :icon_confused:
Hmm
The guy with the 4.0 engine said he had the computer and all the wires and it was good to go to bolt into the Ranger he was working on...
I could (would be happier with...) a little more info on the wiring.

Help and advice appreciated!
Thanks!

You're in luck, i actually just finished rebuilding a 4.0l from a 94 ranger and putting it into my 89 that had a 2.9. Since mine is a 5 speed, I went to pick n pull and found a 92 explorer with a 5 speed that had all wiring harnesses and ECU and basically just grabbed everything i could. ECU, both engine and engine bay wiring harnesses, the EDIS module (under passenger headlight), Radiator, airbox with maf, and a few other things, depending how picky you are about how flawlessly you want the swap to go. Let me know if you have any questions ill see what i can help you with.
