Hi, I'm new to this thread.

So recently i got my dad's '89 Ranger 2.9L XLT.

It's in wonderful shape. The motor however has close to 300,000 miles and is well had its better days.

So i was just curious... Is a 4.0 a good choice in the Ranger?

What would be the best donor truck? I know you have to take the comp, harness, and tranny along with the motor.

Do you have to splice into the harness?

I know im asking many questions and firing them in random order but any help will be appreciated!!

Swap the ENTIRE harness rather than hack up the original.

And the PCM and the exhaust system (at least as far as the cat).

An EEC-IV 4.0L is a relatively straightforward swap. EEC-V requires quite a lot more work.

And you almost certainly will need a better transmission. Most 2.9Ls came with one that could barely handle 2.9Ls (and then, only if you kept it in 4th when you were really romping on it).
