89 ranger 2.9, starts for 1 second, won't keep running

I pulled my manual trans+transfer case to r&r the slave cylinder (gawgggh) and now it's back together, when I crank it, it starts for 1 second but dies when I release the key from start position. Used to start and run fine.

I checked at the TFI connector and get no power at the run or coil pin with the key on, but do get power at the run pin with the key at start position.

If I run a hot wire to the coil +, it runs fine.

Could it be something with the neutral safety switch? I'd think that would just prevent starting in gear, not running after starting but it's the only start related electrical thing I can think of that I touched. How can I test that?

Any ideas?

How do I trace back from the TFI to see where the power is stopping? I've looked at the wiring diagrams but I can't tell.

Thanks much
Matthew

Sounds to me like a bad ignition switch. I'd try testing for coil power at the closest connector when the key's in the run position.
