89 ranger 2.9 issues

The truck runs good when cold but will miss / hesistate / knock when warm.

It has a fresh tune up and a new ish oxygen sensor.

I just tried the koeo and koer and all i can get is code 11.

koeo give me 11 - 11

Koer gives me 11 - 11

I still cant get it to perform the balance test. Run the Koer, wait for the 3 flashes, hit the brake and turn the wheel 1/2 turn. It will then give me the single flash for WOT. I do that and then it gives me 11 - 11. I wait a few seconds and hit WOT again and nothing ever happens.

Any ideas on what is causing the miss / hesistation/ knock when it warms up?

Well being it does it when it warms up it could be the TFI? Its is known to start failing when it gets real hot...

On the balance test, I have a hard time getting my 86 ranger to run any other test than the koeo lol, wish I knew more about testing it myself.

TFI is on the side of the distributor right?

I have replaced that, but not the internal pickup inside the distributor.

My only thought was that it might getting a bad reading from the oxygen sensor during closed loop?

No codes really sucks trying to diagnose issues.

Fuel pressure is good i have verified that, coolant and air temp sensors give the correct voltage readings. Tps is operating correctly the last time i checked. I have switched ecu with a known working good unit. Has a good wiring harness except for the oxygen sensor wires...... Injectors were replaced as well.


On a side note would a good graphing scanner be able to read the obd1 sensors and graph them? I know they work for obd2 but not sure about obd1

Try this,

Unplug the Idle Air connector,

2 things should happen,

A) you should get a code about the IAC not working, and
B) the truck should IDLE, BUT low. (you can turn the Idle screw UP BUT, BUT, BUT., make sure you know EXACTLY how much you turned it, so you can set it back to where it was, after you plug the IAC back in.
