Hey everyone,

I am currently searching for some rebuilding information. I have a 89 2.9L with lifters that are so bad it has 2 dead cylinders(probly burnt valves). Whats the easiest rebuild to do? What kind of shorcuts can you make?

I was thinking of getting the parts and just kinda throwing the engine back together with little to no machine work. Basically replace the bearings, the lifters, the seals, gasgets, etc. I know some head work will need to be done. Will need valve replacement. But assuming everything looks good and is within spec can I just throw parts on it and call it good?

edit: Oh I forgot where could I get the parts cheap?

-Thanks

Rock auto is most likely the best place ot get parts. I suggest if you are puttin geffort into tearing a motor down do it right the first time and not 1/2 ass a rebuild. Doing a 1/2 ass job on a rebuild is basically money thrown away.

Thanks for the parts info.

I don't want to do a half ass job. I just cant afford to do everything. I'm looking at a budget build. You have any suggestions? What would you do? I have a tight budget of like $500-600.

I just bought a ring and bearing set with new lifters and push rods from northern auto part. It was almost 700 shipped and was about 80 less than rockauto wanted before shipping. Only real difference was rock was selling sealed power parts and nap was selling melling. Still good stuff, jusr got it cheaper.

It may not be necessary to do cam bearings I am pretty sure the install of them if you do not have the tool will cost mor ethen the bearing themselves. Check your cam for wear paying attention to the bearing journals if they look fine do a quick inspection of the bearings make sure they do not show signs of excessive wear.

I do not see valves listed on your parts list.

Just did a head job on my dads F250 he opted for the DNJ head set to save a few bucks. The gaskets were not the greatest I have used but for the price they seem to be decent. They are on there and the engine is runnign 10 times better then it was. I have used the DNJ valves on a head rebuild I did on a chevy aveo 1.6l and they are doing fine. So I will say over all bang for the buck they seem to be decent quality.

If you are reringing the pistons you will atleast need to get the bores hones to ensure proper seating.

have your valve springs check to ensur ethey are with in spec as well that is one engine part that is prone to failur eon most vehicles.

don't forget about fluids and general maintenance stuff (wires, plugs, cap, rotor, etc). I would be replacing o2 sensor & ECT while it's easy to, probably going to find some hoses in bad shape. Exhaust bolts are most likely going to snap off. Usually cam + lifters are replaced in sets. You'll probably want the shop to install those cam bearings for you...

Really hard to put a cost on what you're doing, you won't know exactly what parts and machine work you'll need until the engine is taken apart and things are measured.
