89 2.9 manual sounds like a loud diesel in all gears except for 4th

please help! I'm looking for the best advise on fixing my 89 ranger 2.9 4x4 manual trans. I've owned it for 6 months and since day one whenever in 1,2,3 or 5th gear it sounds like I'm driving a loud diesel. At first when I bought it I thought it was kind of cool....sounded almost like I was driving a turbo. I know the trans was rebuilt at some point. Now that winter is here I'm driving more and more over my 89 crown vic.
I read alot of forums on why this loud whine noise is present except for 4th gear.
I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix this.
I get a pic of my light blue reg cab ranger on soon.
My ranger and how well I'll be able to hear after this winter are both very important to me.

i would not even rebuild that one, would look for a different unit from your description.

Can u post a link to a new unit to give me an idea what that intails?

The whine has not got louder in the 6 mths since i've owned it but now in 5th gear the whine sounds a little different.

Do you know weather or not I can drive it this way for say another 6mths. If this whine doesn't lead to the tranny going out or something similiar I suppose a person can just drive it the way it is.
