88 ranger wont start

Hi ,all , I just bought an 88/89 2wd Ranger 2.3 FI,I was told it has a fuel problem ,
it cranks great, if I spray starter fluid in the tb it runs , the fuel pump runs only if I hot wire it but it won't start. the fuel shut off is by passed . so now I'm out of my depth electricaly ,what do you guys think ,thanks.

Which is it an 88 or an 89?

Sounds like either a totally clogged fuel filter or an inoperative pump. You say the fuel pump runs when you use a jumper wire, have you verified that it actually pumps fluid? If so, what is your fuel preassure?

It has been many years since I had my 4 cylinder 88, I do not remember if it had two fuel pumps like the 2.9's or not.
