I have an 88 ranger 4x4 2.9 with a 5 speed manual transmission.
It sounds like a slow moving grinding wheel when when it's moving and it speeds up as the RPM's increase.

I have the chance to pick up an 87 2WD 2.9 with a 5 speed transmission.
Do youall know if this is the same transmission?

Thanks
Jon

Sorry Admins, I didn't realize that this probably should have been posted in the help forum.

Please move if necessary.

Welcome to TRS :)

No, it won't be same transmission
You can look here to see what you have now: http://www.therangerstation.com/stock-ranger-specifications/ford-ranger-manual-transmissions/

Most likely an FM146
2WD would have the TK5 or FM132, also wrong tail shaft and housing for 4x4 transfer case.

Your best bet, IMO, is to get a M5OD-R1(M5R1) from a 4.0l 4x4
4.0l and 2.9l have same bolt pattern and if its 4x4 then your transfer case will bolt to it
Much better transmission
read here on that swap: http://www.therangerstation.com/how...ft/fm146-to-m5od-and-complete-clutch-upgrade/

But you can rebuild the FM146 or see if you can find one that is better than current trans
