88' ranger check engine light

yeah for some reason the check engine light turns on and off when my truck is running. when the light comes on the engine bogs down at an idle it goes from 1000rpms to 500rpms. changed the fuel filter cap rotor plugs. and i'll be darned if ican figure it out so if somone can give me some suggestions thanks

The computer is trying to let you know it sees something wrong (the check engine light). You might start by pulling codes and seeing what it has to say. Check out EEC-IV Diagnostics in the technical library.
