88 ranger 2.9 sputering and ticking

i just bought this truck a week ago and wanting to go through the engine but need to know were is my money best spent

Last year after getting my 87 2.9L 4x4 I spent lots of money and work trying to get it to run right. The best thing I did was to have a diagnostic computer put on it by someone who knows what they are doing. It saved me money and time in changing more parts that I didn't need and he found several problems I couldn't find.

How much did they charge for a putting your Ranger on a diagnostic computer and what problems did it detect??

How long did it take them to do this testing??

Thankfully it was a guy a went to school with who did it and he didn't charge me. He ususally charges $50 and it only took him about 15 minutes. He does it as a business out of his truck so he can go to who needs help. I took it one other place before that and they charged $65 and tried a whole day to find the problem.....and failed. The big problem then was the FPR and it worked fine when they had it and it stayed fine until I got almost home of course. Also my friend who helped me has been doing auto electric work since high school (24 years) so he has seen it all and knows what to look for.
