So last night my 88 ranger quit running. It seems like it's not getting fuel. It will start with ether but not under its own power. I replaced the fuel pump relay and eec relay with no luck. I'm trying to avoid replacing the fuel pumps unless I absolutely have to. Any thoughts?:icon_hornsup:

Check your injectors Make sure they are firing by back probing. Check fuel pressure regulator with a vacuum gauge. Put a new fuel filter in. Idk what else to check as far as fuel goes. Sounds like the pump though. Easiest way to do that is remove tail lights, fuel filler neck bolts, and the bed bolts and lift the bed up from the cabin side and prop it up wit a long plank. Easily access the pump like that without having to drop the gas tank. That's how I did it.

Uh, for an '88 and back to 86(?), you do realize you have at least two (three if you have dual tanks) fuel pumps to deal with? There is a lift pump in the fuel tank, and a high-pressure pump on the driver's frame rail (kinda under the door).

Like other's have mentioned, check for fuel pressure - after trying to start , use a little screwdriver or something to test for pressure at the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail. If you don't get a squirt of gas, investigate further back on the fuel system.

You should hear the high pressure pump cycle when you turn the key to ON (before start). If not, check out the impact shutoff switch (on the passenger lower firewall, just covered by the floormat). Use a test light or meter to make sure power is getting to both sides of the switch, then over to the pump.

If the pumps are good, check the fuel filters (yep high pressure one driver's forward frame rail just before it bends upward behind the front wheels) There may also be a low pressure cartridge filter further back, though I think by 88 there was no low pressure filter, just a plastic accumulator barrel. If you do have dual tanks, try switching between tanks and make sure the fuel tank switchover valve hasn't died on you.

Good luck!
