i have a 88 ranger with a 2.9
it misses with the spout connector in checked spark in all cylinders and timing is right on
but with the spout out it runs great
what could this be

It sounds like the timing isn't advancing right to me, pull codes.

With the spout connector in, can you see the timing adjusting on it's own with a timing light?

I've got the same problem now and yes, I can see the timing advance if I open the throttle. At idle it jumps around intermittently. With the spout connector out it is rock steady!

It's a timing related fault, test your tfi module and pickup coil.

Just installed rebuiilt distributor. Will chekc out my tfi module. Who has relocated thier tfi module to the firewall?

ill for sure check those things out

Replaced my tfi module and runs better but still not proper.

I'm told that a ranger's computer will cause a single miss periodically just to make sure it can still detect a miss. Not sure how often you miss is happening... While looking through my Haynes manual I notice a few little discussed systems that might deserve your attention.. I'm aware that with the spout connector in the system can retard or advance timing, with it out it cannot, this is why it's disconnected to set base timing. Dura-Spark II systems use ported vacuum switches, cold start spark advance, cold start hold spark, these systems advance and retard timing. Unfortunately it also says diagnosing these systems is beyond the scope of the home mechanic.
