if the '88 engine has the aluminum oil pan you can just swap the front seal housings and swap the crank sensor onto the old block (requires drilling and tapping 3 holes), move the distributor hole plug thing to the older block, swapping the brackets to the other engine and mounting the ignition module on something and grounding it and using all of the wires from the '92. on the 3 wire connector for the drivers side coil pack cut the wires a couple inches back and splice the two wires that are the same color to ground. if you have a tach, it might not work afterwards, I haven't quite figured that out on my end yet...
can I use the 2.3 from the 88 in my 92 ranger without alot off hassle because I'll be going from a none distributor dual plug to a distributor 4 plug and I'm wondering about if the wiring harness, what changes i have to do.

work THIS wiring diagram backwards to convert to distributor, I still suggest starting with the original harness, and with that swap to your original throttle body, I like the connector on the newer ones better.
yes, but you would have to use the intake manifold that was mounted to the head as the bolt patterns are different. while you are swapping heads look to see if the cam is a roller version or not, if not swap the roller cam and followers from the '92 into the '88 head. and after that you would still need to remotely mount the ignition module and delete the drivers side coil pack.
