I got the pads I needed thanks to the guys here for the right advice given. I changed them today and got quit a shock when I took the wheel off. The guy I got it from told me he didn't do anything but drive it so I figured it need new pads since he had it for several years. Well he certainly did do something! He got the wrong pads! He got the ones for the common caliper and mine has the "oddball" caliper, not only did he get the wrong ones he put them on anyway!!! The outside pads were way to long for the caliper and they were dropping down and wore a hefty grove on the rotor and all that was keeping them from flying off was that little rivet that holds the clip on,and it was almost gone and the spring clips that hold the pads on was long gone. I have bad hearing so I didnt hear it grinding ,the only thing I heard was a slight "thump" sometimes when I would hit the brakes which was the pads sliding forward. I thank the Lord for putting it in my mind to change the pads or some really bad things would have happened really soon. Please, please if you don't know what your doing on brakes ask someone for help if you can't afford to have it done. Stopping is more important than starting when it comes to cars and trucks. If it won't go it might make you mad but not stopping can kill you or someone else!

I bought an '87 B2 as a parts truck that someone put the wrong pads on, and it also wore quite a groove on the rotors. The shims actually folded over, and the retaining clip was twisted.

I don't know what scares me more....

The obvious lack of skill some people have in regards to the most important feature of a vehicle (brakes)

OR

That they drove it like that for weeks making that gawd awful noise, without figuring that maybe they did something wrong.......

That reminds me...when I read AllanD's post I was going to go check mine because it was manufactured in 87...was wondering why I paid so much for the calipers back in 2000 or so...

Ditto on the warning, but you should put that in a separate paragraph and bold it...it sorta gets lost at the bottom of your post like that...

Ahhhh......

I seem to remember us having a discussion a while back in regards to parts prices. I didn't realize you were referring to the "oddball" brake combination........

Oddly enough, both of my '87's have different brakes on them. My reg cab has the more "common" (and cheaper) brakes on them, whereas my ext cab has the "other" brakes on it. If I ever have to change them, i'll swap it all over......

Yes, now that you mention it...but I just checked mine and they are not the oddball calipers...the line attaches to the back of the caliper...

I'm just wondering if CTC charged me for the oddball calipers at the time though...I still have the bill somewhere, but it's probably a bit faded by now...

I might check with another parts supplier to see how much difference there is between the two though...
