I have a 87 that the touch drive system was taken out. Has anyone bypassed the module and built switches to engage the 4wd low and high ?

It has been done. I don't think there is a tech article about it. But if you search the forum, there are threads with people talking about doing it. If I recall, stopping the motor at the right time is tricky. It might be easier to find parts to reinstall/rebuild your touch drive system.

What’s all needing for the touch drive system to function 100% looks like I’m just missing the touch drive overhead module its self

Any help ? I can’t seem to find any advice on what to do to get my 4wd working properly. Can’t find a touch drive switch that isn’t $300

The system is made up of 3 basic parts. The pushbuttons where you select 2-hi, 4-hi and 4-lo. An electronic control module, often found behind the driver seat in a Ranger. And the shift motor at the transfer case. The shift motor has a little wormgear box on ot that also contains some electrical contacts that tell the controller what position the transfer case us in. Here is a good place to begin troubleshooting and figuring out what components are working, not working or missing. In many cases, the contacts at the shift motor ate dirty or corroded from not being used often enough.

If I remember correctly the 87 bronco II have a abs module and not a 4wd module.

ABS has nothing to do with your 4x4 system. If you have an electric shift transfer case, it has a control module. On much, much newer trucks, it is built into the GEM or something like that. But on a 87, it's a separate module.

Any idea where it’s located in a 87? 88 plus it’s where the abs module is on my 87.

Anyone know if you can use the 89 up 4x4 switch ? The touch drive ones are impossible to find ?

I am sure you can, it will be a matter of finding the newer switch and the harness that plugs into it, or at least the plug itself and a foot or two of wire........ you will have to look at wiring diagrams for both vehicles and figure out how to splice the donor harness into yours. I am 99.9% sure that the plug on the newer switch is different than the one on the old switch but otherwise the entire system functions the same way... I think the modules are even the same up until 1994 or so.
