hey ya'll, i have a 87 ranger 4X4 with the 2.9 and 5 speed. my problem is that everytime it gets a little moisture in the air, be it rain or heavy fog, it will stutter and cut out around 2500 rpm. like its running out of gas or something. i replaced the coil, TFI module, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, plugs and all that stuff. if i turn off the switch while driving and then back on it will straighten out for like a minute or two. then its back to cutting out again. i'm about ready to throw a match in the seat if not fixed soon. guy at autozone says it might be an injector problem. but it runs fine when its dry. i'm only gettin like 14 miles per gallon because of this stuff. please help me on this. thanks.

Weird I got nothing only thing I can think of is the moisture it's affecting something electrical. Maybe you air filter is getting wet from the air coupled with grime thus reducing air flow? Just throwing anything out there lol.

Somebody will chime in with better ideas

i had a cap and rotor causing the same issues. even with a new (cheap) cap and rotor it did the same thing. i ended up buying one with brass contacts. take yours off and spray some wd40 inside and see if that helps.

mine did that too untill i replaced my cap. i see you replaced yours... maybe inspect it that its not cracked?

Try taking a spray bottle with water in it. Go out after dark n start at the plugs n work your way up. Look for an electrical arc Or a miss. That will let you know where to look. Im from greeneville and Im down everyother weekend, Im down this weekend so if you can't figure it out i may be able to help hands on.

I had issues with moisture too with my 2.3...but I found an 89 Ford Tempo and they have a rubber boot on the distributor and I put one of those on my distributor (with a slight mod) and also one on the coil (wont work with multiple coils or coil packs) and the issue has pretty much disappeared...

Spraying the electrical circuits with silicone spray also helped, but one set of wires swelled up so you have to be careful with that...

Did you ever find this problem out, as I have the same.

ok guys i changed to the brass terminal cap and rotor. it has worked so far. stuttered once since then was about out of gas as the gauge dont work. lol thanks for the info though.
