87 Ranger In-Tank Fuel Pump

Okay, so I tested the fuel pressure. The pressure goes up to 40 psi with the key on and then immediately drops to 0 as soon as the pump turns off. With the engine running, it is at 30 psi. If I rev the engine up, the fuel pressure rises up to 40 psi or so.

So does this mean my pumps are fine? If so then what is the most likely culprit?

I'm back at square one.

30 psi sounds a little low, I would check the fuel filter and see if it has piked up more trash.

Do you think the pressure bleed back and the hesitation could be the same issue? Like maybe a leaking/bad injector? If not, then the pump check valve is probably the cause of the pressure bleed back, but wouldn't affect the truck while it's running.

If I ohm out the injectors, would it tell me if one of them was clogged?

So it looks like my pressures are good then?

Well my pump came in and I decided to install it. Got the bed off fairly easily. The problem now is the dang pump lock ring. It is not budging. I used a flathead screwdriver and hammer and all it did was destroy one of the tabs. There was a lot of caked on sand and rocks on top of the pump that I had to chip off. So I'm not surprised that the lock ring is seized up. Does anyone have any tricks to getting this thing off? I would rather not drop the tank, but I may have to at this point. Is there a special tool for these things? Anything else I can try?

If you have compressed air, use that to clean the magority of the dirt off. If not , use the water hose to clean the tank and sending unite. Let it dry then use liquid wrench or a semular product and let soak for a day or so . Tap around on it some to losen. Use a flat face punch or drift to remove the ringe. The objict is to keep the dirt out of the tank. When removeing the ring. switch tabs as needed. Make sure you have a new 'O' ring seal the old one may not fit back in the grove , sometimes they grow a little in size. With the pump/ sending unite out check for rust / dirt in tank and clean as needed. Make sure to replace the screen/ sock filter on the pump ,not all pumps come with them.

Well I got the pump out, put the new one in, and now my gas gauge works and the trucks starts fast like it should. But that wasn't the cause of the hesitation. But, I did figure out what the problem was......freakin' plug wires! I changed the wires and plugs and now she runs like a champ!!

Lesson learned: Start simple!

Anyway, now the stupid fuel reservoir is leaking gas because I took it apart last weekend looking for a filter to change and the o-ring tore. So now there is a new one on the way.

Thanks to everyone for the help and advice!
