ok i know this subject has been covered quite a bit in this forum, i have searched and everything is close to my problem but not quite the same. i have an 87 ranger with 2.9. i bought it a few weeks ago and drove it an hr home and it ran fine. it needed a new clutch so i replaced that. after the clutch job the truck still ran perfect. i was driving and the truck died, and would restart but only run for about 100yds then it would die again. thinking that the fuel pump went out i replaced the inline fuel pump. still the problem remains. i checked the intanke pump and it was not working at all so i replaced that, and the inline fuel filter as well. the truck will fire right up and will have about 40psi fuel pressure a bout 30 seconds into it the fuel pressure guage will start dropping down to 20 then back to 30, down to zero then back ect. i minut or two of this and the guage will go all the way to zero and the truck will die. if i wait with the key on the pumps will pump the fuel back to 35ish. i pulled the vaccum line off the fpr and there is no fuel in the line at all. also there is no difference in the way the truck runs wether the vaccum line is on or off the fpr. any ideas?
also i need to read the computer codes, is there an easy way to do this? like jumping the pins in the diagnostic port? or something without a scanner. thanks for the help guys

well... check to make sure either of ur fuel filters arent clogged.
but, if you go to check the little one, not the one on the frame, be careful u dont break the housing, or that things not goin anywhere...

could you help me out with this a little more. like where is the self test thinger, and can i do this with a digital multimeter or does it have to be analog. i canot find much of anything about reading codes in the search. and that write up is for people very fimalar with rangers or something

ok i have found the connectors and everything. with everything hooked up according to that code reading write up, i get one needle sweep when i first turn the key on, and thats it. and the same thing when i hook up the jumper, or with it unhooked same thing everytime one needle sweep and thats it, so what could be wrong or what could i be doing wrong. the help is greatly appreciated. i bought this truck and drove it an hr home then it started doing this and has not moved so i am very frusterated with it. thanks

I believe the fuel pressure will shoot up when you remove the vacume line if the FPR is working. My FPR was bad and no fuel ran out of the line and the first few times I checked it didn't even smell like gas. It worked sometimes(like when I had a shop check it) and then not work(like by the time I got home with it). When I changed it the line did smell like gas. Mine would still run worse when I pulled the line off the FPR with it running. If this is the problem rockauto.com has a FPR for $28 + shipping,Autozone and Advance sells theirs for $86+tax. It does sound strange that it dies completly, mine didn't do that,it just ran really rich. I have had mine since March and I'm still learning too.

That's interesting because my fuel pressure does not go up if I pull the line. 40psi is the highest that it gas gone no matter what and I drove it around with the gauge on. I guess I will try replacing the far and see what happens then.

40 psi is normal with the key on engine off. From what I have read here it should drop from 3 to 6 psi when started. Mine is at 40 key on engine off and drops to 31 running. I believe if you remove the vacume line with it running it should jump up from whatever it has while running. With no vacume the FPR thinks the motor is at full throttle and richens(sp) the mixture with more pressure.

i just installed a brand new fpr and the only thing that changed is, rather than the needle on the guage being jittery it just has a steady drop to zero then the piece of shit dies. and i cant get any codes to read. i just one sweep of the needle then nothing

Fuel supply issue. Fuel pump shutting down. Fuel pump power source is the FP relay-FP fuse-Battery. Now because it starts up and you get good pressure...for a bit, I would assume the pump is fine. You may just have a bad FP relay.

Try bypassing the inertia switch under the passenger side dash with a jumper and see what happens. It could be going bad and killing the power to the pumps.
