I put a 79 pinto motor in my 87 ranger. It ran great for about the first hour. I had some over heating problems but not serious enough to shut the engine down or anything. I believe I solved them by flushing the engine out several times. A lot of rust came out. My big problem is, it went from running good, I shut it off and the next time i started it it would hardly run at all. It will not idle at all and when it's goin down the road, it bucks wildly. Thing is, I put a manual choke in when I installed the engine. When I put the choke on, it runs ok. Not perfect but ok. I have to leave the choke fully closed at all times. What's the deal here?

carb has dirt in it and when you started the engine and shut it off, the gas softened the dirt in the carb and now clogged the ports. time to pull it apart and clean it out. also put an inline fuel filter before the carb.

I think blackwindow may be right but I'm not sure how much he really knows, HE did put a 350 in a ford. (Cough retard cough)
But I would start looking at vacum lines and rebuild the carb. good luck
