i have an 87 ranger 4X4 with a 2.9 and an A4LD automatic. i also have a 5 speed trans out of a 93 explorer. my question is wether or not the 5 speed i have is compatible with my ranger and what would i need to do to accomplish this swap other than the clutch and flywheel stuff

Well, do all the connections match up? Wiring harnesses and S**t? or are you just gonna rebuild the whole thing. When I finally get around to putting turbo in Lilly I wanna rebuild the whole thing just to make sure it's perfect. One big thing with putting newer in older is making sure everything matches up and what you'll have to modify. There's debate on wheather it's easier to put newer in older or older in newer. I like to keep all my extra parts around the same year/generation.

Yes, the M5od out of 4.0l Ex will bolt up, but your going to need a lot more stuff.

You need (some things arent NEEDED, but they make it look stock):
Trans
trans bolts
block plate
flywheel
flywheel bolts
clutch
clutch bolts
master cyl
slave cyl
hydraulic line
manual starter
manual computer
manual trans harness
shifter boot
clutch pedal position switch
clutch and brake pedal

thanks for the feedback, mine was an origional 5 speed. at some point someone put the A4LD in it. it still has 1,2, and OD. 3rd is kinda hit and miss and reverse is almost non exsistant, have to put in 4 low to go backwards and even at that it still slips bad

the 5 speed i have has the electronic transfer case, will my manual transfer case bolt up to the m5od i have

Yes. It will bolt right up.

The A4LD and M5OD use the same T-case shifter.

I did a 4ald /elect tc - 5 speed/man tc last spring. It is relatively straight forward.
I would suggest that you obtain the drive shafts from the manual if you can. I believe I had to put those in as I remember having two sets and one was a few inches shorter, one was a few inches longer for the swap.

Here's my writeup.

The driveshaft differences you ran into is because you used a FM145. Thats a few inches shorter then the a4ld/m5od/fm146, which are all the same length.

That is correct. I was fortunate to have the entire vehicle in the yard for the swap. I certainly didn't want to go with that trans, but it was what was there and is working well, so far . . .
