87 Ranger 4x4 not engaging

I have an 87 ranger and its push button four wheel.When you push to engage it in four wheel it does not engage and jus makes a horrible clanking when you try to put it back into 4x2 it clanks even worse. it will do this until you come to a complete stop and put it in and out 6 or 7 times and then let it idle for a min and that will get it to kick back into 2 wheel. Any suggestions or tips much appreciated.

okay now i dont know a lot about t cases but it sounds like it could be the metal belt/chain that allows it to switch over when they go bad i no that they make a horrible noise that sounds like its going to break apart or something and since it is an older one they do tend to stretch out a little but that is still enough to make it not engaged
