I have an 87 with a 2.9. It lost a bit of coolant over the course of 6 months (the last time I checked it). I topped it off and a week later it was about a quart low on coolant. Now I see a bit of green around the area of the water pump but above it.

I have NO oil in the coolant or sludgy milkshakey oil so I dont think its a head gasket. THe truck doesnt overheat. It runs really cool because it has a 180 thermo (opinions on that would be good too).

I suspect thermostat gasket or water pimp leaking. Though if its the water pump it would be the seal around it and not the weep hole.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like your on the right track....seems like it maybe time for a new thermostat...its a starting point anyway.

check the hoses...wrap a paper towel around the hoses that are near....IF it gets wet, then there is where your leak is at. If that doesn't cure it then on to the pump.

does it run OK other than the coolant leak??

Yep. It runs great otherwise.

I put the thermo in about a year ago but who knows. I will try it and also try the suggestion of the paper towel

Thanks

Yeah I'd say prolly the t-stat gasket, it's a rubber split o-ring that the thermostat sits in......maybe the water pump gasket.
