OK. the stiff linkage went away pretty well, after adding a qt of fluid, the low miles rebuild has a loose gooseneck....goes into all gears SPECTACULARLY cept for OD, should i just shotgun the TCC Solenoid? +does that require dropping transmission pan?

thx in advance, jim in NC............

Why would the torque converter clutch solenoid have anything to do with 4th gear?

I understood almost none of that. The goose is loose and your going to shoot it with a shotgun to get into overdrive?

im here at a forum to LEARN,......not be bush wacked..thank you kindly sir..

Try expressing your issues more clearly and with more detail. No one can help you diagnose an issue over the internet when you don't take the time to provide a detailed and well written question. When did this problem start? Will it not shift into overdrive or will the shift lever not move into the overdrive position? What is a loose "gooseneck"? Did you buy the transmission recently? Did it ever go into overdrive since the rebuild? Who rebuilt it and what was replaced? Is the fluid level actually correct or did you just guess by dumping another quart in? Fluid level has nothing to do with the linkage anyway so that's confusing? The linkage will move even with NO fluid.

You aren't a bush and nobody whacked you.

My question is valid. The TCC clutch, and it's associated solenoid, have nothing to do with the engagement of the OD gear in an A4LD. HOWEVER, many people unfamiliar with the transmission and it's normal operation notice the drop in RPM when the TCC engages in OD and perceive it as a shift, which it is not. I am trying to figure out WHY YOU THINK they go together so that I can gauge your actual level of understanding, and thus determine where to START TEACHING you.

Dirtman also asked a series of valid questions that would be useful to have answered before we dive in too deep.

I'm gonna guess that by a "loose gooseneck" you mean the gear selector lever is loose, and possibly doesn't have a good engagement feel to the stops.

One practice that is helpful in determining what gear or gears may be missing from a mechanical automatic like that is to count the shifts. At a dead stop you start out with 1, and then each time the RPM drops, or you feel it shift you count off. With the TCC you should get to 5. In regular Drive you should only get to 3.

Don't look at the little indicator on the shifter as to what gear you are in, start in park and count (P,R,N, OD). Make sure you actually shifted to overdrive. The shifter on my 88 B2 is a bit sloppy too, not nearly as bad as it was before the transmission was rebuilt though. In OD, you should feel each shift from 1st through 4th, then what feels like an additional "shift" that is the torque converter lockup. Take it out for a drive and pay attention to the shift points. Then post back your findings. ADSM08 is one of our extremely knowledgeable techs here but you gotta make your posts make sense and be as descriptive as possible...remember the guys here don't have your vehicle in front of them to physically test for you so gotta be descriptive LOL.

Are you saying the vehicle won’t take off in the OD position but move in low (1sr gear)? Does it have reverse?
