Hey guys

Im looking to change out my clutch in my Ranger 87 2.9L 4x4. Since im going to change it out I might as well do a Clutch upgrade. So I was woindering is there is any good affordable Clutch upgrades for these cars?

Would like to keep it strictly under 200 dlls for everything, since I don't need that much. I daily drive this truck to work and I offroad pretty hard once in a while.

I was looking at this one:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1524168

specs: 8-7/8" OD X 1" ID X 23T, Flywheel Spec: FLAT; Kevlar® Facing Option

Any other options considering my price range? Thanks

Your not going to find any HD or HP clutches for under $200. My Sachs clutch for my 4.0L was $160 in the normal package. (which would actually be an upgrade for the 2.9 but i'm talking HD towing clutches)

So the clutch I posted is no good?

Also.. So a 4.0L clutch fits?

Okay so im trying to gather all the parts up.

The 4.0L Clutch upgrade will also work on my 1987 FM145 Transmission right?

So yeah decided to go the 4.0L Clutch Upgrade route and it's now getting installed at the shop.

Ok so I just got a call from the mechanic and he's telling me everything fits good but the Release Bearing from the 4.0 Clutch kit does not fit correctly and fits Loose.

Thoughts or help?

You should be using a new FM145 slave that will come with it's own throwout bearing.

So basically I need to reuse the stock 2.9L Throw out bearing (new of course)??? The 4.0 clutch throw out bearing that came with the kit need to be ditched correct?

I'll try interpreting;
Like hahnsb2 implied, you need the original style of throw-out bearing that came with your 2.9 motor and fm145 trans. So yes, chuck the throw-out bearing from the kit and buy a new one specifically for the fm145 trans [the stock trans in your truck]. The throw-out bearing comes as part of the clutch slave cylinder.
Good luck,

Richard

Oh ok great. Never seen this mentioned before though so never thought it would be a problem. Thaks alot for the help.

No difference between a 2.9 and 4.0 slave/throwout bearing, just between the FM145 and FM146/M5OD (they use the same slave).

Just get a new slave for the FM145. Don't ever re use slave cylinders in these trucks. It'll come with a T/O bearing

Well got the truck back from the shop and I did get a brand new Throwout bearing for the FM145 stock trans. Just picked it up a few hours ago and let me say it feels great. Feels super light and strong, feels like a totally different Transmission. Also I really like the way this starter sounds compared to the 2.9 starter.

Would recommend this to anyone.
