'87 2.9 Distributor Bolt Access & Location?

'87 motor in an '86 4x4 chassis.

Timing is advanced 14 deg TDC and won't pass smog (CA law requires timing must be within factory specs...in this case no more than 10 degrees advanced of TDC).

I cant seem to find the distributor adjustment bolt. Both Haynes and Chiltons manuals say, "...loosen the distributor adjustment bolt..." and mention the possibility of a special tool.

Anyone have tips or pics they can share?
 
stubby 13mm wrench works pretty good if you have small arms.
 
I have one of those special distributor wrenches for a 2.9 but I can tell you it's a tool that has been discontinued for 17plus years.

a 13mm swivel socket on an enxtension works

as does a 13mm 1/4-drive socket on a 1/4 drive ratchet.

The distributor hold down is at the distributor base
and (IIRC) it's on the back slightly offset to the drivers
side of the dist

So I have to get fancy with extensions and swivels and be able to turn the distributor to within timing specs...sounds like a two man job eh?

Any tips for solo timing adjustment?
