I just found an 86 turbo diesel ranger in great condition with only 100 000 milles and the guy only whants 1200 for it. The only thing thats making me esitate is the 85hp its got. Does anyone has done some mods on a turbo diesel ranger?

thanks

There rally isn't anything you can do to the diesel rangers here, they are so rare to fine that it was hardly worth creating an aftermarket support for them. not to mention the stock parts for the trucks are already impossible to find. if you get it you get it for 40mpg pretty much.

get it, bring it back to life, make it pretty and have yourself a nice little show truck with the uniquity of the diesel engine with the great gas mileage.

idk about the diesel ranger, but everything else thats diesel you can turbocharge and make breathe really well. that really opens it up for power and ive even heard of increasing the size of fuel lines on some trucks (duramax diesel certain years). other than that i guess its experimentation or find somebody that has one and see what they say.

ya ive heard people putting a bigger turbo and some 4bt injector on it but wanted to now how the engine handel it.

thanks for the response.

with the truck in stockish form you can crank the lil turbo bastards up and still get good economy and decent performance.

but the only decent solution for POWER is a cummins.:dunno:

leaving the truck stockish and turning the pump up will be alot easier then putting a 6.5 diesel in it....which was my solution to having a truck built up to fat bastard proportions.

thanks thats exacly what I wanted to hear.

BUt its shour that a soon as I can afford it will be a 4bt cummins

thanks for the info

i've done some research on these engines myself and from what i've gathered you can expect roughly 85-95 hp and 135-140 ft-lb of torque. you can get SOME parts in north america but they are rare. your next best bet for parts of any kind will most likely be JDM. my advice is turn the pump up, bigger down pipe on turbo, bigger exhaust, and tack weld the waste gate shut**. you should see 30-40 hp and about 50 ft-lb.

**note is said tack weld don't get crazy with the welder in case you want to go back to stock. 3 tiny tacks will do, maybe 4 depending on what you weld with.**

question on the turbo tack weld, how much boost are we talking after doing such a thing? the purpose of a wastegate/blowoff valve is to keep you from running excess pressure and relieve the pressure from the intake manifold when pressure exceeds a certain amount. for example, let off the gas to change gears, unless you have a blowoff valve/wastegate to relief the pressure you will blow an intake gasket or backlash the bearings in the turbo and damage it. the better alternative is if the turbo has an adjustable wastegate is to adjust it to blow off later, or tack weld as you say to increase overall pressure and install an inline blowoff valve to pop the pressure during sudden throttle closure instances.

i believe that tack welding the waste gate will allow 25 psi of boost (the turbo is tiny for a diesel)... but having the fuel or guts in the engine to reach that much boost is another question. and yes i forgot about being able to put a blow off valve in the system. i would just get one from a 4bt and retrofit. i believe an intercooler would be a good idea.

Hmmmm I was looking for one of these for awhile pretty rare beasts. I ended up buying a Jeep Liberty CRD. Some guys up in Michigan were taking those little diesels and putting them in the Wranglers.. Would be nice if FORD would just bring us there nice little Power Stroke Turbo Diesel they sell in Europe and South America in the Rangers! I think the little buggers are even made by International hence the name Power Stroke!

Ford contract with international is up pretty soon I think and when international goes so does the "power stroke" name. They are thinking of replacing it with something stupid like tornado diesel or something... They aren't called power strokes in the international rangers either... its like the dura torque diesel or something.

ive heard from a couple people that ford might be getting cummins engines... any truth to that i'm not sure so don't quote me or have a fit at me

its still a powerstroke.

ford could have used a v8 cummins at any time.
