86 toyo koygo woes

hey all.... back to the ranger family after a 10 year break. I recently picked up an 86 standard cab short bed 2wd 4cyl 5 speed manual steering/brakes for an eventual v8 swap. I'm also remodeling my house so in the meantime of collecting parts, I need to keep it road worthy for parts running. With all that beind said... I have the wonderful toyo koygo and am having all the problems one would expect (sloppy shifter, leaking fluid, and I have no 5th gear). My question is what should I be looking for in a swap as cheap and easy as possible? Anything just swap in that's a touch better than another 20+ year old anchor? its a 2wd so that seems to be harder... does it have to be from a 2wd or can I just swap a tailshaft? does it have to be a 2.3 donor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can swap in the newer Mazda trans. You'll need one from any 2wd 4 cylinder (2.3/2.5 Lima for sure, maybe Duratec as well?). It's a couple of inches longer, so you'll need the shorter driveshaft as well. The specifics should be well documented in previous threads.
