hey guys, i got a 86 2.9 4x4 ranger today, brought her up to my garage and put in a battery and turn the key an no fuel pump will cut in. so i check the shut off switch an couldnt find either one anywhere. so i figured id put a drop of gas in the intake and see if she will bite off that, but she didnt even tempt to go. so next im thinking maybe its the coil? if i put gas in the intake an she still wont catch, im guessing it gotta be spark? i know that she wouldnt run without the pump anyways, but still when i put that drop in the intake she should of at least caught a bit but she jus kept crankin over without making an effort to go.
what do you guys think i should do next?
thanks alot. i really need this truck going quick

Try pulling a spark plug to see if it's getting spark when you crank it over. Hook the wire back up to the spark plug and hold it real close to the head while you crank on it. See any spark?

Also, can you hear the pump turning on when you turn the ignition switch to the run position? I can hear mine faintly. If you can't hear it, check your fuse block in the engine compartment for blown fuses. If you can hear it, it might be a plugged fuel filter.

thanks ill check the spark and as i mentioned i cant hear the pump running, and i dont think those pre-89s have the fuse box.. cause my 89 has it and 4 of my pre-89s dont have it.

check your fuse block in the engine compartment for blown fuses

There is no engine compartment fuse block on the 1st gens, only the passenger compartment block.

Isn't there a fuse for things like the fuel pump? Or is it fusible links?

There are a few fuse links, but just because there is a fuel pump fuse doesn't mean that it has to be under the hood. There were a lot fewer circuits on those old trucks, they could get them all in the passenger compartment.

Boggin-B, did you get your fuel pump working?

Did you check the Fuel Pump Relay? That might be it. Try probing for power around there. Otherwise I'd try jumping the pump to see if you can get it to start moving again. That would tell you that you've got an issue before the fuel pump.

Oh and there is a cut off (inertia) switch. Just under the passengerside dash. Its a little button. Give that a shot to see what happens!

i mentioned that switch in the beginning post and there is neither switch. also i have a build thread started now. none of the original wiring harnes will be used on this truck. im using the cab, harness, all other wires, fuel pump, lines, brakes etc from a 88 it will be a complete frame-off resto. heres the thread for it http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81678

did you check the inertia switch under the carpet on the passenger side I believe you have two fuel pumps in the tank and on the frame rail under the drivers side.
