my 86 ford ranger 2.9l 4 wheel drive has a problem that I am sure is a simple one but can't find the reasoning. I do not have a computer otherwise i would check it. I just traded for it and when it has been sitting for a while and you go to start it you have to put your foot on the gas when it starts otherwise it will die. I thought maybe it was a little slow on timing but it isnt. also when you are in 1st thru 3rd gear it wont take off fast and it misses but the quicker you gear out to 4th or 5th it quits... even if its completely lugging. I don't understand what the problem could be. any help will be greatly appreciated

ok i asked this question but also i got to thinking and could the reason be that my ignition coil is mounted on my wheel well which is plastic...my 92 was placed on my intake???? i"ll post back tonight because i think im going to move it to my intake like it was on my 92 this afternoon.....still would like any advice

Mine was/is mounted on the plastic fender. If it were me, I'd start simple - new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and check the fuel pressure while it's running. Might be worth while to do a compression check. Also pull codes.

Pete

the spark plugs, distributer, cap, and rotor, are all new as well as the icm

Test the MAP sensor, its on the firewall on a bracket its got a plug and a vacuum line going to it off of the upper intake. It measures load and advances timing and all that fun stuff, could be that. Also check your grounds, the one on the upperintake by the injector harness, as well as the one on the back of the engine on the head against the firewall, and of course the main off of the battery.

Hows the Idle Air Control Valve? Have you cleaned it??

I agree with everyone else with plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc......
but the fact that it has trouble starting would make me wonder about that being an issue too! Its easy and free...why not

its probably the idle air control, like this guy said. the IAC opens fully at startup because the throttle is (or should be) totally closed when starting up. if it doesnt open all the way or is slow, it will choke out the engine.

jhammel85 where is the idle air control valve?

Its on the passenger side of your upper intake...Looks like a cyl with a triangular flange. Looks something like this

Take it off and spray some throttle body cleaner inside the two holes. Cover them up and shake it around like crazy. Do that a few times until all the carbon nastiness comes out.
then remove those 2 Phillips screws that attach the backend to the front (Solenoid side and plunger side) and do some more of the cleaning...just to make sure its all clean.

You might want to get a new gasket...I didnt when I did mine and its fine but You never know!

so would the idle air control valve also explain the jumping that it does when i am taking off....its the wierdest thing i've ever dealt with because as soon as you get to 4th or 5th it will drive as fast as you want and never have a problem

So you know, my coil's on the driver side too. I'd leave it there instead of re wiring or whatever to relocate it.

About taking off though....Is it just a sputter then it moves? That could be something else or it could be the IAC. Honestly I dont know. I would start with cleaning the IAC just to see what happens.
Its free, you know?

What about the fuel filter? Maybe its partially clogged? Its a cheap fix that needs to be done at some point or another...just like the air filter. Plus, if the truck was sitting for a while and the old gas ran through it, would very much clog a filter...let alone all the rust and crap thats probably in there too.

Have you checked fuel pressure @ the rail? Are both High and low pressure fuel pumps running?

My other thought would be, if its doing this warm, cold or all temps? That can help us diagnose the problem a little better too.

when i replaced my air box i removed that vacum hose going to the hose that sucks in air all i did was cut a piece of hose put it on the and put a bolt in there to plug it do you think that will affect the way it runs?

sorry if its a dumb question i'm only 15 and just getting to no these trucks
