Hi my 86 ranger turns over but won't start. It was kinda chugging a little so i put some gas line antifreeze in it (as recommended by a friend) It seemed to help a lot but now the truck will not start. Anyone one what's wrong?

I know that with some of those chemicals, it has been known to kill your fuel pumps. Happened to my dad's work trucks a few times.

wait, anti freeze in the gas? i think your friend ment something like HEET, it evaporated the water in the fuel. anti freeze just keeps water from freezing up.. when you put the key in the run positon, do you hear the fuel pump kick on?

You didn't happen to check fuel pressure at anytime before it died right? The chugging could of been the pump dying out....Although I've always had them go suddenly with no signs.

Like Cody93 said, listen for the buzzing pumps. To be sure you hear the pumps, listen under your truck near the driverside of the frame. That pump is hard to miss! Then check the one in the tank by removing the gas cap and listening through there.

If they are both dead then it sounds like electrical to me. If one or both are dead, Check the fuel pump relay. Make sure it clicks on. If it is, Make sure that the voltage going in is the same going out. If that's OK, then make sure there is voltage actually making it to the pump. If it's there and the pump is dead, then you have your problem, a dead pump (s).

If the voltage is not getting there, you can really firm things up by giving the pump some voltage one way or another to confirm that theres something wrong electrically between the pump and battery / relay. No one likes to spend money on a part only to find it wasn't the problem...

By the way, I hope you didn't put regular anti freeze in there, lol.

Well, another dead ranger murdered by lack of knowledge and a 'really good friend'.....lol

Start with the basics- you need fuel and spark for it to run. You can check the fuel at the rail, or just shoot a little gas in the engine, crank and see if it runs the gas out. If so you know it is being starved for gas.

You can remove a spark plug, put it back it its wire, and have someone crank the engine over while you ground the plug with insulated pliers to see if it has spark. Once you find out what is missing, report back for further instructions. Aloha.
