i got an 86 ranger ,2.9 V6, its getting way too much fuel, fouling the plugs, rough ass idle running way too rich, cant even hardly move it around, ive replaced just about every sensor and the computer, fuel pressure is 40psi with the key on not running, when you start it up the fuel pressure drops to 30psi, it had a up and down idle till it warmed up then it would smooth out with the old computer, it ran fine other than the idle problem, so i replaced the computer hoping it would fix the idle problem instead it got worse, now its completely undrivable, its drove me crazy, can anyone help me with this problem

I just put this in my email watch. I am having the exact problem. Mine started when I replaced the canister fuel filter? I have been driving the wife's car and that the only good thing about it because its a Cadillac. Did you read my post ints in here and on 3 pages?

x2 on checking the FPR, take the Vaccum line off the back of it and check for fuel.

I was directing that more to Travelingman, have you checked your Fuel Pressure? What is the PSI?

I have the same issue that he has? One thing that I have not tried os to get a vacuum test gage and see if the FPR holds pressure. How does the bad FPR cause a rich condition?

Because there is a rubber diaphram that breaks/cracks and then leaks fuel, the Vaccum then sucks said fuel into the Intake. I'm sure there is a way to vaccum test it, but I don't know the procedure.

Arrrg. If me ranger were driving me nuts, it would be driving the rest of me, too. Is today "Talk Like a Pirate Day?"

One (common) failure mode for a bad FPR is to piss fuel through the vacuum line.

If you put a vacuum gage on the vacuum port. Pump it up to pressure, it should hold the pressure?

no gas in the vacuum line on the FPR, i have replaced every sensor, just had the top end redone, compression is excellent, new spark plugs, new computer, new fuel pumps, new filters, new TPS, New MAP,new relays, everthing lol, i did all this to try and solve the surging idle at startup, ran fine other than the erratic idle until i replaced the computer, thats when this fuel problem started, so i sent the new computer back under warranty thinking it was a defective one, got another computer from a different manufacturer, plugged it in, exact same fuel problem, fuel pressure is 40psi KOEOff, 30-32psi KOErunning,so if the fuel pressure is right, my question is What is telling the injectors to add more fuel? Two things i havent replaced,1-o2sensor, 2-FPR

also i have replaced with new, cap, rotor, wires, ignition module, and one other thing i havent replaced besides the o2 and FPR is my ignition coil, its got me stumped lol

But you haven't replaced the several miles of wiring in your truck.

And you're assuming new = good. Trust me, that's very far from guaranteed.

Have you at least run the self-tests? That should be done before replacing ONE part.

do you see gas in your oil? is so its probly your Fuel pressure regulator, it uses a vacume and when the diaphram has a hole or crack in it the vacume lines will suck pure gas right in to the intake. probly your left rear cylinder.

Anyone know if Autozone ships to Canada? I priced out a FPR locally from one of the "cheap" places and they wanted $160 for one! I've tried Ebay too, but some places want ridiculous amounts to ship up here, charging the Priority International instead of the first class rate. Ebay prices and shipping prices are almost equal.

I had/have the same problem. Ran KOEO & KOER tests via my ODB II code scanner and came up with clear KOEO. During the KOER test a replacement freeze plug failed so I had to abandon the full test. The truck sat for a few weeks. Yesterday I replaced the faulty freeze plug and ran the tests and had no KOEO codes. However, I have one KOER code that reads "HEGO sensor detects LEAN condition". The 02 sensor is operating properly.

How do I correct a LEAN condition in a 1987 2.9?
