ok so i just traded my 92 ranger xlt 2 wheel drive with a 3.0 for an 86 ranger 4x4 with a brand new 2.9 liter motor in it and i'm having a few problems with it. it did jump really bad on the bottom end but i changed from the auto lite spark plugs that were in it to a set of motorcrafts... also the old sparkplugs were gapped to .035 and were supposed to be gapped at .044..... it runs a lot better now...i cleaned out the iac valve the best that i could but it still acts wierd when it hasnt been started in a while... when you start it and the motors cooled off you have to gas it and then it acts like it has a choke and revs its self up until it warms up.... once it warms up it runs fine but if you try and drive it before it warms up it jumps and misses and dies on you unless your foot is on the gas.... i am wondering what this could be? if you need any more info send me a message or reply...i try to check daily and if you ask for more info i will send some more i just dont know what else to say about it

when you start it and the motors cooled off you have to gas it and then it acts like it has a choke and revs its self up until it warms up....

What do you mean "gas" it? Does it crank for a while before catching?
If so, that may be a bad check valve in the high pressure inline fuel pump.

How far does it rev up when cold? I think it is supposed to rev up around 1200-1500 rpm's for a short bit when cold. If you hit the throttle real quickly does the idle come back down?

i mean that it starts right up but it needs you to push the gas even the smallest bit for it to stay running... and it does rev up to about 1200-1500 rpms and yes if you hit the throttle fast it does calm down i just didnt know that a fuel injected truck did this

Yeah they do it. All of my full sizes did it. My 86 2.9 does the same thing.

Pull your codes to solve the other issue. How is the compression and vacuum? Start by completing those three items, then report back with results. The problem could be all sorts of things.
