I have a 86 ranger 2.9l and i believe its my egr, but when i shut my truck off theres a clicking noise next to my air filter. keeps clicking for awhile after its turned off. just curious what it is and why not getting the greatest mpg right around 20 mpg. and have a very mild miss at idle. and help appriciated.

Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Possibly that the battery is a bit loose and making the relay click???

I would check for codes to see what's going on....plus 20mpg isn't bad at all. Its around the ball park that it should be if thats a mix of highway and city. For instance, I get a mix of 19mpg as a 4x4 automatic.

So you used to drive a Prius?

On a pure highway tank, mostly down hill, and being very nice to the throttle I managed to squeeze 23 out of it. That's the best I've ever gotten. From new my truck has hit 17.5 pretty regularly, usually not better than that.

As for your clicking, go pull the black plastic cover outboard of the filter box off, and start touching things until you figure out what it clicking. Then take a pic of it and we will tell you what it is.

EGR flow at idle is more likely to kill the engine than cause a mild miss. It's more likely worn plugs. Do yourself a favor and give 'er a tune up. Plugs, wires, filters, cap and rotor.

I'm taking a pic but my truck diagram says + evg and has 2 vac lines one runs to egr and one to the throttle body next to air flow sensor.

I'm having an issue with the same thing. It buzzes for a while (after truck is shut off), and then clicks. Fiddling with or disconnecting the vacuum hoses stops it, but plugging them back in makes it start up all over again. I'm not troubleshooting mileage though, I'm troubleshooting an intermittent battery drain. I'm not sure if this little valve doohickey is it or not though since the battery randomly drains and this little bugger clicks/buzzes every single time the ranger is shut off. I've been going at this for a while and thought I'd fixed it.. but if I've been driving without a radio for half the 5 months I've had this truck for no reason, I'm going to be a little upset.

To correct this, do I need to replace the little valve doohickey ($26.99) or the relay that feeds it, and if the relay.. which relay is it? My manual (either haynes or chiltons, can't recall which) is 98% useless.

And yes, mine is an 86 2.9L 4x4 as well.

The noise you're hearing is normal functioning of the EVR. They all do that. Don't worry about it.

Most people driving 2.9L powered trucks would be happy with 20mpg. It could certainly be worse. If you want it to get better, start with the basics, plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Then get a vacuum pump and check that your EGR valve is opening properly. It's easy to test. With the engine warm, hook your vacuum pump up to the EGR valve. Pull 8" of vacuum. The engine should stumble or die. If it does, the EGR valve is ok. If it doesn't, then either the passage is plugged (which is what happened to mine) or the valve is bad. Fix the EGR and your mileage will go up.

I don't know about the battery drain.

I've had this same "buzzing/clicking" noise in my truck, on and off, for as long as I can remember. I've never bothered chasing it down since it doesn't bother me and doesn't seem to be hurting anything. I can assure you that if fiddling with the vac lies makes it stop, it will not drain your battery.

update: drain wasn't a drain.. it was an intermittent catastrophic failure of the solenoid cooking itself and making my battery smoke. Replaced.
