86 Cherokee front driveshaft question

86 Cherokee, 2.5 4 banger, 5 spd, 3" suspension lift, no idea what transfer case, but it is the Command Trak vacuum activated 4wd.

The front axle has the CV drive shaft and it needs to be replaced quickly, I am finding that they either had the CV shaft with the boot or a u-joint shaft.

Anybody know if you can interchange the two shafts & if so, which one would be better with the 3" lift?

Any info will be much appreciated......

My other half had an '85 XJ before we got her 2000 one....it had the CV shaft, if that's the one that looks kind of like a soup can? Anyway, her son made her a "normal" shaft (2 u-joints) that didn't work too well. I read somewhere that 4x4 Comanches (Jeep pickup, XJ-sized) used a double-joint setup that would work well. (Her 2000 XJ has that type of shaft.) We ended up putting the original shaft back in, after a rebuild. Even with the 5" lift, it never did vibrate or anything. So you might check into either a Comanche shaft, or one from a later-model XJ.
