86 bronco ll starting issues

I would get an occasional back fire and no start when my timing (distributor) was 180 off. Unhooking the fuel pump relay esclated the "popping" since it wasn't flooding anymore. Sounds like it's trying to fire the spark plug when a valve is open. Should run on ether/starting fluid if it were a fuel problem.

i tryied to start it on starting fluid with the relay unhooked still wont run

so if it won't start with starting fluid ...then like phycopete, mentioned it might be a valve or 2 not shutting correctly.

what is the compression? just a guess that you got a low cylinder or 2

I also have the same problem in a 86' ranger just put a 2.9 in it with lower miles. it has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, gas. it has has good spark and the mechanic said it was timed correctly its getting air, newer furl pumps and its getting good fuel pressure....i have no clue what it could can anyone Help ME?

i have finally got some where. the only thing that i have not tried is to pull start it. so the other day i had my friend pull start me and about 300ft later it started right up and smoked like hell. so i drove it around to clear it out for about a half hour. then took it back to my garage and it died and i couldn't believe that it did start right back up. it did have no power so my finall conclusion is that the rings are shot. so if you have these problems and you do not know what it is. it could very well be the rings and needs to be rebuilt. so now im just going to swap it out for a 4.0 L so is that a good or bad idea. thanks for everyones thoughts and ideas and help.

you'll prolly be happier with the 4.0...it has a much wider power band for touque

You might check you ground wires. the neg. wire on mine bolts to the frame and to the engine block. I also have one from the back of the drivers side head to the windshield wiper motor mount. Check these and make sure you have good ground. the one on the frame to the block would be my guess if it has been mud bogging.
