"The TFI module is the grey box on the back of the distributor. It has no bearing on the computer timing it just reads the hall effect sensor and fires the coil from the timing curve that the computer feeds it. The EEC is what is different between the 86-87 trucks and the 88-92 trucks. This is the mod that was being discussed. This is behind the passenger side kick panel in the cab. Without pulling codes (procedure described in tech library) you are really just shooting in the dark as to your cold idle issues."

I was just reading this previous post & was wondering what was so different between the 86 & 87 ? Could it be possible that the wiring diagrams differ also ?

Am I reading that 86 - 87 differ from each other... or 86 & 87 are the same but 88-92 differ from them ? Are the 86 & 87 EEC's interchangeable ?

I read it as '86-87 is one group different than '88-92 as another group.

86-87 are egr equipped, 88-92 are not. If you are having issues with your egr system then swapping to a 88-92 EEC is a cheaper fix in most cases
