i just got my truck running great last week, and on my way home from work a couple nights ago, i left and it ran fine for about a mile and then when i headed out of town and sped up it stumbled and lost power. i floored it, and it sped up fine and then lost power again. i shifted it out of OD and floored it again and it did the same thing. after about 30 seconds it ran fine again. it was running fine for about a day, and the same thing happened when i left my house, about a 1/2 mile down the road. anyone got any ideas???

its an 86 2.9 auto. 4x4

Same thing is happening on mine. I changed the TFI, new plugs and wires, new distributor cap and rotor, cleaned my terminals, put in injector cleaner twice and still does the same thing. I am completely lost and hopefully you can find whats wrong with yours so i can maybe see if its the same thing. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! I'm so fucking fustrated!

I had the same problem and then i went and replaced the fuel filter and it ran fine again for about a month or so and then it just acted up again so i went and bought another fuel filter and its running fine i would check that. it like a ten dollar part

well the first problem i had with the truck was that when i tryed to speed up, it stumbled and even backfired on me once. i changed the fuel filter after the pump but not the canister one before the pump. turns out it was the canister one was clogged.(was even making my fuel pump humm). i am thinking that maybe the filter after the pump might have some shit in it from the canister one... i'll try a new filter after the pump this weekend and let ya know.

Test your fuel pressure, are you port injection or throttle body, I was down on power in my 2.9L port Inj. engine, and I finally replaced all 6 injectors, later I also replaced my fuel pump in the tank and the pump on the frame rail.

same thing happenin with mine. its an intermittant problem. but its aggrivatin. im startin to think its the ethonol they are puttin in the gas now. cause alot of these 86 2.9s are havin this problem, starting around the same time

ALL 2.9's are port fuel injected.....fuel injectors rarely are a problem. that said, it can happen though.

recheck electrial connections...focus in on grounds, A bad ground will do funky things.

also check for vacuum leaks.

can't say that this is your issue fella's...but after I change out my TPS much of my inconsistancy trouble subsided...found a dead spot ...prolly a poor connection inside the TPS, one of the connection spades was ...iffy shall we say. Biggest gain was when I pinned down the battery

i been havin problems outta my 2.9 lately as well and the fuel filter is new, and its not consistant problem it just does it every so often, it will cut out spit and sputter and cough black smoke from what my dad dicribed one day, and yesterday it wasnt running on all 6 then after a lil drivin hard it cleard up, like it had water in a connection or something, any ideas?

well, im gonna try changing the sock on the internal fuel pump, as well as both of the fuel filters and see if that fixes the problem... :pissedoff:

i'm thinking that it might be the TPS. also, it seems to be VERY SLOW! it takes forever to get going 60 mph. and when i am cruising along at say 60, and i floor it, it revs up like hell, but doesnt seem to speed up. this fucking thing is pissin me off to no end. :pissedoff:

I'm right there with ya. Took mine yesterday, I was going up the grade usually i get up to 55mph but yesterday it only went up to 30 mph.:pissedoff: I have checked and rechecked and i still kind find the problem.

Are all you fella's truck have Auto trannys?

do you all have cats in place and are older? Might have plugged Catalytic converter??

I have an 86 2.9 v6 ranger, and mine did the same exact thing, i replaced about ten parts (lol) before i looked underneath and saw my o2 sensor on the exhaust was broke, so i replaced that, and i has run perfectly the last two years i have been driving it :)
(makes sense, since the o2 sensor tells the engine how rich/lean to run, so if thats busted/doesnt work, then the engine wont know how to run :icon_confused:lol)

ya mines an auto. TPS didnt work and i am goin to do another fuel pressure check sometime today, and the cats are cut off of mine.

mines been runnin better now that im runnin a higher grade fuel. changed the fuel filter, tps, and tfi. been runnin good till it gets to bout 1/4 of a tank.
