Alright guys I am in need of some help here. I was going to school this morning and just as I am turning in my ranger just dies. So I coast into a parking spot and it won't start but it will tun over. I have some mechanical experience and I am pretty sure that its the Fuel Pump. Now for the question Where's the fuel pump? and how can I test it? I have the 2.8v6 with the mechanical pump. I will also replace the fuel filter while im under the hood.

P.S.-- From the information I know about the truck this is the original fuel pump.

go to the carburator and follow the fuel line down to the pump. its on the front of the engine.

It is easiest to remove the power steering bracket to get at it, if you have A/C... maybe not.

Personally, I kinda wonder about the TFI module in the dizzy. They were very bad about dieing for no apparent reason.

You can see the fuel pump peaking out from behind the lower water outlet... it is a royal treat to change with everything in place.

Hey guys thanks for the info so far we have checked the Fuel Pump and its good, we changed the fuel filter so its good, we checked for spark and we had none so we put a new coil on the truck and still nothing! The truck has a new distributor assembly already now a coil the only other thing I can think of is the plug wires. Is this where I need to go next?

check tfi module, make sure its getting power too.

Not to sound stupid here but whats the tfi? I am already going to get a set of plug wires and new spark plugs in the morning. After that if it doesn't fire it may be getting parked because i'm very quickly running out of $$$.

They don't just die for no reason. They are fairly sensitive to heat, and there is tons of that back there at the back of the engine.

I'd also look at the TFI. When I have a no spark condition on a TFI system, I generally suspect the module before the coil. Those coils are pretty robust and don't die easily. The modules were somewhat very much less so.

Get a TFI before you get plugs and wires. I'll snap a pic on the engine I have out of the truck right now and post it up for you when I get back from the store.

Not exactly something that is easy to monitor though...

You are correct, but IME TFI failures are not nearly as common on the EFI small block V8s that have the distributor in the front where the engine bay is coolest.

Now, as promised, pics:

The TFI in this pic is broken.

Look right below the wiper arm. I know my engine is a little different than yours because I have a 2.9, but its all in the same spot.

Ok guys, I found the TFI I never heard it called that I always heard "Ignition Control Module". I have a good friend I went to school with coming over Sunday to help me get the new TFI installed considering it takes a special tool to get off. Thanks for all the help. This is definitely where I'll be coming when I have more problems

It doesn't really take any "special tools" just practice and a 5.5mm socket. And practice.

Oh, did I mention it takes some practice. And lastly, a 5.5mm socket.

Ok guys just an update here. The Ranger has come back from the dead again. I had a friend that had a tool that autozone sells for the TFI to remove it. He came over and replaced my TFI and let me keep the tool in case I ever have to do that again.

Thanks for all the help here guys I definitely will come here when I have more questions.
