I just bought an 85 ranger, and I'm a little confused. I didn't think it had ABS or TCS but I'm thinking it does. Also, I need to reset my brake lights and replace the fuel gauge. Any advice, or even just knowledge itself helps. Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly when I bought my 89 BII new in 89 I was told the ABS system was new that year for the Rangers and Broncos. You can search in the tech area on this site to verify that or just Google your question.

It doesn't have ABS or TCS. Power steering and power brakes were an option then.

As for the fuel guage issue, its most likely the in tank sendors float has developed a hole, very common thing, and has filled up with gas and caused it to sink and stay at the bottom.

Trucks have always been WAY behind cars in the offering of safety features. Rangers didn't get ABS until 1989, and it was a rear-only system. I don't think they got 4 wheel until 95, and it was only if you had 4wd and/or the 4.0L. 4 wheel ABS didn't become standard until 2001, and I don't think they got traction control until 2010.

Thank you guys for all the help. I will definitely check the sender here soon, at the moment a 6gallon gas can is half a tank, so I always carry at least one with me. I'm glad to hear they didn't come with TCS or ABS, I'm not a big fan. I'd prefer to have full control over my vehicle, for both stopping and starting.

My 85's fuel gauge was a little messed up for a while. Make sure everything on the gauge is snug first (I had a screw loose on mine cause the needle to not sweep properly). And yeah they only have like 11 or 12 gallon tank.

89 was the first year of rear wheel ABS, my first ranger was an 88 and it did not have it... but the 90 I have now does
