85 5.0l swap advice

Being in wonderful California I have to do battle with the smog police. What can I expect with swapping in 85 carb 5.0 into my 83 ranger. How difficult will it be to swap in the 5 speed from my sc, which appears to be a mazda truck transmission. AOD be the easier choice?

the AOD would be easier.... by SC do you mean super Coupe? that should be a T-5. you can use an M5OD-R2 (F150) or a ZF with a small block patter (F150/250/350) as long as you use all the smog gear that came with that engine (if it came from a car then use all the car smog gear) you should be fine ..... not to familiar with California laws but I know of a 6.0L(from a 2500 HD silverado) powered 82 FJ60 in Mira Loma that past smog that way.

The 89-95 t-birds used the mazda truck transmission that comes with a hydraulic clutch.

I know of a guy living in Santa Rosa CA who has this in this truck but he's running EFI:

1992 Ranger with a 1995 5.8 L Engine - 11:1 Compression & AFR 185 CC Heads- A9L and Moates Chip - AOD and 3.73 Detroit Locker *smog legal* in California
1989 Mustang w/ H/C/I V-2 SQ and A9S w/ TwEECer

If your using a newer engine in an older truck --- I'd sure look into that. Here the rule even change by county (the smog test).
