I'm new to Rangers, and just got my first...a '85 2.3L. Bought it not running and trying to sort it out.

No spark had me buy a new ICM, but haven't installed it yet...

It seems I have no ground to my current ICM...What do I check first?

I tested the wire, with my multi meter...

The ground wire...which is pin #6 from ICM, goes into a shielded wire with a blue wire, yellow wire and the shield...back to the ECU...

I have continuity all the way TO the ECU...ECU has it's ground, which has continuity as well.

Is this indicative of a bad ECU?

Is pin #20 ground to the ecu. Do you hear the EEC relay click when you turn on the key? There is a ground wire where the computer and relay screw to the bulkhead in front of the passenger door.

The ground you speak of, by the door is intact and I tested it to the pin at the ECU...that's in working order!

EEC relay?

just to make sure, check for continuity between pin 20 at eec and negative battery clamp(or post if cable is connected). and while you're set up for that, also check pins 40 and 60 for continuity between the ecu connector and the battery(-).

the eec relay on my '87 2.9 is above the wheel well about 7 or 8 inches from the starter relay, toward the rear of the vehicle.

When you speak of Pin #20, 40 & 60...you mean at ECU? The way you've worded it confused me...is there a Pin #20 at EEC relay?

If a bad EEC relay, would that cause a No Ground to Ignition Control Module, symptom?

I will perform some tests today.

The Ground lead to EEC, from TFI seems fine, but I don't get Ground...

So What would cause the EEC to not supply ground? BAD ECU or bad EEC relay?

Pins #20,40 & 60 all make good ground!

Upon turning key to RUN...EEC relay clicks, so that's good!

Mysterious orange wire, under hood, not connected, has been traced back to pin #49, which seems to be for heated o2 sensor.

Guessing bad ECU, but my replacement doesn't arrive till tomorrow.

Anything with a computer can have codes.

ECU arrived....

I now know that '85 Mustang and '85 Ranger ECU's are totally different...didn't even fit the engine harness plug.

Bummer...hopefully eBay store will take it back...

Went back to the auto parts store, for a cheapo Ignition Control Module...the same one I bought last week. Ranger fired right up!!!
