84 Steering wheel vibration

Is it just mine, or does about all of the rangers have a steering wheel that just vibrates like crazy when the engine is running?

The engine itself runs pretty smooth, but the steering wheel just hops like crazy.

My friends 85 F 150 does the same thing




Is it just a ford thing?

What do you mean vibrating? LIke when you are driving o when the truck is sitting?

More then likely your wheel has a broken part on it...

When It's running and sitting in place.

Once I get going it vibrates less

can you physically move the wheel around like jiggle it? Sounds like maybe its a tilt wheel with a worn out locking mech. or something?

The steering wheel isn't a tilt, and I can't jiggle it.

If I pull up and down on the wheel with moderate force it moves the whole column a bit.

It isn't just the wheel that bounces/vibrates, it's more like the whole column does. Watching the wheel bounce is the best way to visibly see the vibration.

I've checked the steering couplers and steering bushings and they're all in good shape. No cracks or excessive wear.

Did you check under the hood at the cab column to P/S pump connection? I knwo mine was sort of loose and if it was loose on yours it would allow the wheel to be pulled out.
