I have a 1984 Ford Ranger 4X4, 6 cyl. 5 speed TK5 trans. The reverse is going out. I am trying to buy a transmission for it. There is one for sale but it is a 4 speed. I do not mind going to 4 speed, but will it fit? Does anybody know if you can put a 4 speed in place of a 5 speed??

I wanted to put a 5 in mine, I have a 3auto and did not switch cause mom doesnt know standard =P

I do not believe you can, but I may be wrong, I only know that a 5-speed and 3-speed can be swithed out in the 1984's

out of curiousity, post a pic of your ranger

It should bolt up to your engine but the 4 speed is shorter so you would need the drive shafts with it...

:bawling:

Well, I aborted on the transmission swap. Thanks for the information in regard to the drive shafts. My Ranger is a long bed, and I would have had to swap both shafts - and who knows what else. Fortunately I stopped the process in time to be able to keep my money. Being a member of this forum has already paid off.

I am uncertain right now whether to just sell, or to continue to wait for exactly the right transmission.

Here is what I need:

A TK-5 transmission with 4wd for a 6 cyl. 2.8 liter 1984 Ford Ranger.

If you see one of these birds out there, give me a holler (that's a shout if you are a Yankee). I am interested - if it is $500 or less. I have an offer to rebuild mine by local shop for around $600+.

Check the junkyards in your area. I just swapped a 5 speed in my 87, paid $125 for it. I live in PA but its a popular truck so parts are out there. If you gotta get a tranny from a different year, see if you can get the driveshafts at the junkyard also. That'll save you from a hefty driveshaft job at the mech shop. I found another tranny at the same junkyard from a different year and the guy was only going to charge $40 bucks for the driveshafts. Just search the yards, parts are there. Also check Craigslist.

post a pic of your ranger, I wanna see it! !!!
