the engine is completly stock it has a 750 edelbrock on it and it does not run right. i can get it to idle pretty easy but when i wanna punch it and go it just shits on itself and hardly has enough power to get out of its own way and it loves to back fire. should i use a smaller carb and maybe try and time it better this is my first project so any info on how to get it to run better would be great and i just changed all of the plugs and they were very very old and did have some oil on them.

I had to rod/jet down my Edelbrock 1403 (500CFM) to get it to run right on my stock '87 non-HO 302.

the only thing not stock on the motor is the edelbrock performer 289 intake that is on it. i dont really no how big of a difference that would make.

If there hasn't been any cam or head work, your wasting that carb. I only run a stock Q-jet on my 347, but the heads and the cam are built around(and work with) that carb. Sometimes the biggest is not the best.
If this is the 68 from your other post, hang onto those heads. I have them on my 69 motor and they are better flowing than the later years. They are less restrictive on the exhaust side (mine took very little porting).

:D The Edelbrock Performer 289 IS a stock intake. It's just made by Edelbrock instead of Ford. Put it side by side a Ford iron 289 4 bbl intake (or even a 2 bbl) and you'll see what I'm talking about.

ok thats a good thing. now i just need a smaller carb i guess. how can you tell if your engine needs a rebuild when i rev it up she blows some smoke not a crazy amount but its still there.

What color is the smoke ? How much blow by do you see coming from the oil filler hole, when running the engine without the PCV connected ? How much oil does it use between oil changes ? (how long between changes here too?) And does it oil foul the spark plugs ?

there is like a little puff of grayish blue smoke when i start it up and when i changed the plugs they were all wet with oil. i bought it 2 weeks ago with a fresh oil change and i had to put in almost a quart of oil my oil filter relocator lines are leaky and need fresh lines to tho.
