83 ranger carburated high idle


Yeah thats a carter feedback YFA i believe.

I coulda sworn there were 4 bolts, maybe there is just two. But its not the big nutted bolts where the flange bolts to the intake. Its the little screws where the body of the carb bolts to the flange.

This will create a massive vaccuum leak. I had it happen on a 300 inline.

Youll have to pull the carb off to get to those screws...heres a pic of the bottom of the carb with the screws marked best i could...

With engine idling you can spray Soapy water at the base of the carb to see if RPMs change, they will if it sucks in the soapy water

You can do the same with Carb Cleaner or Ether, but both of those can catch fire, soapy water is much less dangerous and only downside is cleaner engine, lol.
 
Well it's been a while. I pulled the carb off and the 4 bolts on the underside weren't loose but weren't very tight either. I plue lock tight on them and got them tight. What was lose like way loose was the two nuts that hold the carb itself to the intake. I got it all tightened up and it does run better and will idle once warm it has a hard start. Honestly I would like to pull this carb and all the junk and run a simple mechanical carb. Anyone know a good bolt on carb?

On a good note I also put in a new power steering pump and my power steering works great now.

With a feedback system youll also have to convert the ignition. Similar to what guys have to do with the 2.8s i would believe.

Loose base bolts will definatly cause a massive vacuum leak.

When its warm, try starting it with your foot resting the throttle about 1/4 way, release once it starts. It actually says to do this in 70s owners manuals, i would assume the same for yours.
 
It's possible you don't have to convert the ignition. My 83 had the Duraspark ignition and regular vacuum advance distributor, as well as the MCU (computer) that must not have been doing a whole lot. It's possible a YF/YFA from an earlier year without feedback would bolt on. They might not be for the same engine, though, and I have no idea how the Carters are tuned.
