ok, so since im new to axles and such, i have a 98 ford ranger 4x4 3.0 w/ a 5 spd. 373 gears, do i ahve an 8.8 or no?

Yes you have an 8.8, 28 spline.

Check the axle code on your door sticker (you can look it up here).

it is only a 7.5. thanks guys. but i want to put in an 8.8. i hear you can get them out of an explorer and newer ones have discs in the rear. should i go with an explorer 8.8 or a ranger 8.8?

The 27 spline Ranger 8.8 is a bolt in, you will have to weld some things on the Explorer axle to get it to work. The FX4 Level II trucks use a 31 spline with drums and a Torson differential, but they are pretty rare to find used but should also be a bolt in should you stumble apoun one. Unless you do alot of hard wheeling or heavy towing the 27 spine 8.8 should work fine though.

Yeah 28, not sure where I got the 27 from. :icon_confused:
