hey guys i just got my ford racing rebuild kit form jegs today to rebuild my 8.8 trac-lok and have searched everywhere for the info i want and cant find it(haynes, chiltons, TRS tech section) what i need to know is this...

1. the ring gear torque specs
2. thickness tollerance of packs
3. shim tollerances
4. and how the HELL do u get that damn spring back in?????????

help?

W/ 3.73's I didn't have to take out the ring gear to change the clutch packs.

The spring goes in pretty easy really. I fought and fought with it for a couple days (just giving it a few tries every time I thought of it) thinking it should go in as hard as it seemed to. Turned out I had the spiders one tooth off so they were not perfectly parallel and the spring never would have fit. It went right in after after I noticed my error.

I used some of the old clutches with it to make it a little tighter than it "should" be.

it should be shimmed about as tight as you can get it and still get the cross pin through it (between the axle shafts)

btw, you wont need to pull the ring gear. even with 4.10's i was able to get everything in and out, with the carrier still in the housing.

well i did get it! i pulled the ring gear to make things easier...i shimmed the packs .40 on each side and put it all back together...to get the spring back in i used a BFH, alot of naughty words, and a BFCC(big f'n C-clamp)....now its tight and perfect..even got the backlash in spec which is pretty good for an old ranger with 340k on the clock ;)
