Does anyone use spools? Are they good or they suck? I know it's pretty much like welding the rear end without the welding. Just wondering what ur all thoughts are on them. Thansk

I have a mini spool in mine. The axle is from a 94 explorer. I don't drive it on the road, if you was just going to use it for off-road I would say go for it. But there are alot of guys here who do run them on the road.

I know a guy or 2 that have a mini spool and drive it on the street... it's NOT for a DD.. if it's a DD just get an Aussie or selectable locker depending on funds.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's not my dd but I occasionally take it out for a spin. I was just thinking with the truck the rear would be pretty light with nothing in the bed making it a little easier on everything.

I don't like 8.8" spools because they are only available as a "mini-spool" and have multiple pieces (at least last time I checked there was no 8.8 full spool available).

You'd be better off doing a proper welding job on the stock 8.8" carrier (remember to leave the crosspin free so you can get the axle c-clips in & out)

I agree with 4x4Junkie. If you don't have the $ for a locker just weld it. I ran a minispool in my Xploder 8.8" for 60000 kms of dd and lots of wheelin with 35's and 37's. At the end it had alot of play in it so I removed it before it blew up and took out my Ring & Pinion. It also chewed the shit out of my axles and wheel bearings from hopping around turns. Which is what the welded diff will do as well. The longer the truck the less it hops.

Ran a mini spool in a 68 bronco. Not a DD, but street drove it. I liked it for the price, but I rather drive a V8 muscle car in the ice and that bronco with any dampness on the street, esp in SoCal.
