Well I finally got a 8.8 now it is time to get it ready! :yahoo:

On the Maintenance side, Should I rebuild it and what kind of rebuild kit should I use?

On the locker side, I am leaning towards the Lock-rite but I hear about the No-Slip is pretty good, Has anyone tested it yet?

What are some good braking upgrades for it?

thanks in advance!

In order to rebuild the 8.8 you will want to change the fluid obviously change all thebearings and seals, shoudl be 4 bearings and 2 seals (2 bearings onthe carrier) A gasket for the diff cover unless you just do rtv. Theres not much more too it than that. Unless you wanna do a complete teardown, strip, repaint , and rebuild. Theres the braking components too, new rotors, maybe new caliper, new pads, if you ave drums then new drums shoes and a brake rebuild kit with new wheel cylinders etc.

There is a real good article in the new Offroad Magazine on differences in lockers and l/s and which is best for you.

I have an 8.8 No-Slip.

Very happy with it too. It has roughly 30K on it, and I commute 56mi per day...with lots of varied driving (stop and go, freeway and backroads). It has worked flawless and I hardly notice it.

It is more pricey than the Lock-Right, but the extra price is because it has better road manners. I can still chirp a tire if I get careless, but the new characteristics it brings to the table have never bothered me.

Offroad it really shines. 100% lockup 100% of the time (unless maybe, you coast down a hill....but who does that :icon_rofl:).

Depending on how many miles, or if the axle looks really old I'd rebuild it. If for instance it is fairly new with 100k or less I'd just change the brake pads and fluids, and swap it in.

IF, the 8.8 u have came out of a stock vehicle i wouldnt worry about overhauling it before it goes in, if the brakes are good id just fab it up and put it in, the 31 spline 8.8 is plenty strong for these truck, and as such they dont experinece bad wear that comes from a axle being stressed

locker/limited slip wise, id go with the lockright, the no slip is nice, but its still a limited slip, i like to know for a fact when i drop the hammer i got both rear wheels goin

The Powertrax No-Slip is basically the same thing as a Lock-Right, with better road manners. Its a fully engaging, automatic locker, just like its cheaper brother. Its not a limited slip. It locks up 100%.

Yeah the No-Slip is a locker.

I'd rather have a lock-right, I daily drive a No-Slip and I hate how much the inside tire has to spin before it locks, it's very annoying. A normal locker, you put your foot down and it locks instantly.

I love my No-Slip...I DD my truck and it has never given me any problems of locking or chirping tires in parking lots, etc, and it locks exactly when I want it to. Couldnt ask for a smoother or quieter locker.

Weird, mine does not exhibit these characteristics. My inside tire never slips any, once I give it some throttle it locks up instantly like you say the lockright does.

That sounds more like what I'm used to. :icon_thumby:

My friends No-Slip in his Ranger did it too :dunno: Go around a corner and with any decent throttle the inside tire will spin a bit but it won't lock until you give it more throttle :dunno:

Thanks for the responses y'all!

Hmm that is weird, My truck is going to be my DD and the occasional Dirt road/Trail blaster I am leaning towards the NO-Slip but like Hahns, I would like 100% lockup all the time... But I dunno.

I'd say go for it. Mine has never given me spinning issue. Once I give it throttle it locks up. The inside tire spinning is a problem, maybe his synchro rings are toast or his springs are missing/shot. Performance wise the Lock-Right and No-Slip operate the same, only difference is the No-Slip doesn't ratchet around corners.

It's not wore out, both of our No-Slips were put in brand new and both do it/did it. The same syncrho ring system that keeps the teeth from overrunning eachother in a corner also prevents it from locking back up if you're not using enough throttle.

My Lock-right was never noisy and it locked up with minimal throttle, it never spun the inside tire before it locked. Nor do my Aussie lockers or the Detroit my friend now has in the back of his Ranger, the No-Slip was his first locker and he likes the Detroit's manners way better.
