I want to swap out my 7.5 axle for an 8.8 my question is what year/model rangers or explorers with l/s 8.8 came with 4.56 or 4.10 gears? what would be the best 8.8 to run for a prerunner/desert truck on 33s?

Look for an Explorer with a 'D2' axle code, L/S 8.8" with 4.10:1 gears... They never came with 4.56:1 gear ratio...

yea I read the axle codes chart but I was wondering if there were certain years or model explorers that came with 4.10s

Not really, you should be able to find a 4.10 8.8 in 95-01 explorers. You should really get 4.88s for a 2.3 on 33s though.

yea I think a fx4 8.8 with 4.56 would be fine should hold up with a truss

I have never come across an fx4 with 4.56's in it factory....all have been 4.10's

Apparently 4.56 8.8's from the factory exist, but I have yet to see one.

I know they apparantly exist aswell, but yea never ever seen one.

The only 8.8's to get 4.56's were U.S. forestry trucks.

An 8.8 doesn't need a truss unless you plan on jumping the truck. Then you shouldn't use an 8.8.

I think some chassis-cab models also came with 4.56's IF they had the optional payload package but they are exceeding rare also. Really no point in looking for one, just get an 8.8" and buy the gearset you need.
I didn't know about the forestry trucks though, thanks. :icon_cheers:

thanks for the feedback 4.10s will have to do then, better than stock I guess. this is for a prerunner/race truck that I plan on going fast I dont think I will get too far with the 7.5. I know on the expo 8.8 you have to relocate the spring pads and wider ubolts but will everything else bolt right up?? even with disc brakes and everything?? same for an fx4 8.8?

Yea no kidding on the cab and chassis being rare.

Plumbing supply place near my house has one, about a 95 or 96. Only genuine one I've ever seen, they've had it since new. Wood flatbed with short sides and a pipe rack on top for hauling, uh, pipe.
